Down the ages, human feelings have found great expressions through the custom of gifting flowers or bouquets. People often go to a florist to buy flowers for all occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, to wish well to someone, to apologize, or just to lift one’s drooping spirits.
Some people think that this tradition started way back during prehistoric times with excavators discovering its evidence at ancient sites. History, legends and folklore dating back to ancient China, Greece, Rome and Egypt show flowers to be an undeniable part of social practices. These ancient cultures considered giving flowers to be a great way of conveying one’s thoughts and feelings. The ancient Greeks even believed some flowers to be related to divinity.
This custom came down to the Middle Ages, and France and England played significant roles in maintaining and upholding the tradition. The modern tradition of giving a meaning to each flower is thought to have been brought to Europe after the French and the British experienced it in Turkey.
The tradition of flower giving attained new heights in the Victorian era. Exhibiting emotions verbally and before everybody was against the tradition during the Victorian period, and thus people used subtle means to express their emotions in the form of gifting flowers or bouquets.
This period saw the formulation of guidelines for gifting flowers or bouquets that we use today. For instance, a bouquet of red roses bought from a florist would generate a rather hostile reaction form your beloved if you gifted it to her upside down. The reason being that while red roses stand for love, gifting them upside down exhibits resentment. These ideas were so in vogue that in the’th century, a lot of books about the language of flowers were written and extensively read.
Time has not been able to diminish this tradition, and people in the present era still find flowers to be the most effective means to express their emotions. Today we have arrived at a point where meaning is attributed to a lot of flowers, and preset guidelines in this tradition are more important than they ever were. Giving a bouquet of red roses is considered to be an expression of love, while lilies are considered as symbolizing attractiveness and purity. A yellow coloured rose is believed to be a representation of friendship, while grief is best demonstrated by a single marigold.
